A week can disappear when your to-do list is longer than your daylight, and we’re feeling all of it: shop chaos, school nights creeping back in, and that familiar mix of “I ran all day” versus “I slept all day.” We talk through real garage-life problems, from a Scout that suddenly won’t prime the fuel pump after a power wash to the kind of low-voltage, no-RPM-signal troubleshooting that makes you question every connector under the dash. Then we get into towing safety and the expensive reality of electric over hydraulic trailer brakes, where a sketchy wiring setup and a poorly mounted pump can turn into a thousand-dollar fix fast.
We also share updates from our off-road world, including the latest on Core rig voting and a new twist that rewards the people who actually support the event: a sponsor pick plus a separate “crony pick” for rigs that don’t win the public vote. We dig into what makes a rig application work, why clear photos matter more than they should, and how tire size and recovery gear requirements keep things fun and safe.
Then Guyer takes us way outside the shop with an eye-opening Costa Rica mission trip recap. We talk volunteer construction at a missionary language school, battling termite damage with steel framing and repairs, visiting churches that look nothing like home, and meeting kids living with no running water, no electricity, and dirt floors, yet somehow showing up with the biggest joy. It all builds to a powerful moment in the Pacific Ocean and a closing reminder we all needed: make time for your friends before “later” turns into years.
If this one hits you, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs a perspective reset, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

New Seats And Real Life Energy
SPEAKER_05We have new seating arrangement because they put a guy by the door so when he has to pee he doesn't have to trip over everything.
SPEAKER_00And I'm close to the whiskey.
SPEAKER_05And Chad's closer to the whiskey. The overhead light is off. It's not for romance. It is so because my eyes won't take it right now. I have I don't know if my neck's out or what, but it's been a day. It's been a day.
SPEAKER_02All the things we talked about that I needed to do today. I didn't do one of them. I freaking slept almost all day today. Really? Oh gosh. I ran all day.
SPEAKER_05And yet again, that's why I'm having her make you that t-shirt. I found a t-shirt saying I'm having Annie mate for Geyer. I got a lot of procrastinating done today.
SPEAKER_04Fucking right. I tried to procrastinate, and Kelly's like, uh, I thought you were gonna vote a lawn today. I'm like, eh, I thought about it. She goes, You probably should think about it more. You should think harder about it. Let's kick this off and then we'll get home at a decent time since it's a school night. Oh, yeah. Oh, a school night. Caitlin was not happy about it being a school night.
SPEAKER_02That would make two of us. Sounds like maybe three of us. I'm looking forward to routine, and that is it.
SPEAKER_05Kick tires like the fires. Remember the last time I've said it.
SPEAKER_02It's because you didn't pause to think about it. Yeah, don't. You just rattled it right off. You just gotta close your eyes and just hammer it through.
SPEAKER_05He, she, they, them. Oh no, wait, that's I I've got one, but I'm gonna save it for the Patreon. Oh, we're all around the table again. And I don't have to edit the preamble. True that. Darn it, Ricky. Damn it, Ricky. Well, we started off with. I guess we're all around the table. They know who's here.
SPEAKER_04Uh where did this week go?
SPEAKER_05Where did it go?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I don't know. I didn't know. I feel like I blinked on Sunday when we got home. And it's Sunday again. Um kind of, yeah. Time warp for real.
SPEAKER_05Well, we're gonna all well, three of us are gonna quickly recap our week, and then we're gonna turn it over to Geier, because he's the one that's he's been an adventurer.
SPEAKER_00World traveler.
SPEAKER_05World traveler. Uh what is it? Oh, blues. He he did a blues brothers thing and was on a mission from God. For God? From God? I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, I don't remember the exact phrasing, but yeah, they got their sunglasses and a pack of smokes and half a pack of smokes and 20 bucks or something like that. Well, you guys recap, I'll find it.
SPEAKER_05Uh let's see, what did I do this week? Um finally Wednesday I gave in and power washed the scout and backed it off the trailer. Then power washed it some more. And then I pulled it into the shop. And yesterday then I didn't do anything else until yesterday I put the snow cat cab back on the snow cat trailer and the tanks and put it back in storage.
SPEAKER_04Did you have the scheduler over there to do that?
SPEAKER_05No, I had it all here.
SPEAKER_04Unless it was all here? Yeah. Oh, I didn't know it was all here.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's why as as I've been told now that it was brought up in her interview, my shop driveway would describe well my land here was described as beautiful and immaculate out front. Annie's driveway is always nice, the front of the house is always nice. Then you come around to the corner and you pull into Chris's junkyard. It's the mullet. It's the mullet. So party out bad. It's a party mullet. It's a property mullet. I guess I should be happy. At least that friend still brings me stuff to work on.
SPEAKER_02So uh the blues brothers quote is we're on a mission from God, said Elwood. He goes, it's uh and the other classic is uh it's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
SPEAKER_05I thought we hit it. I thought I was gonna get to do that, and then he's going to Cedar Rapids to buy one.
Shop Updates And The Property Mullet
SPEAKER_05I'm not sure if I'm gonna buy one. I'm just looking. But so that's about all I did yesterday. Today I was like, all right, oh, I was like, all right, I'm gonna I yesterday I did get the flatbed pulled off Chapman's truck, and so today I could deliver the truck to its designated location. Uh I'm sure he probably got a phone call from the neighbor because that neighbor did not look real happy as I was unloading that, but never came out to ask me what I was doing. I was prepared. And I was gonna be like, dude, I I don't know, this dude paid me to haul this and said to drop it at this address next to the garage. Was it the guy on the other side of the alley? No. Oh, he was staring too, but it was the the guy that has to like walk out onto his back deck to look right at this truck sitting there with no box on it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, fuck him.
SPEAKER_05So um, so I did that, and then I came back home. I was like, all right, I'm gonna rearrange the shop, get the van pushed in so I can get the van cleaned out, get it fired up, get it listed, get it gone. Jump to the scout, powers everything up, I hit the button, I'm like, wait a minute, I didn't hear a fuel pump. Hmm. Oh, maybe it's just a fuse, because I power washed it everything. But it drove in. Pulled right in, never hiccuped. I now have almost all of the terminator harness under the dash pulled apart. The terminator computer pulled out. It says it has 19.9 volts on the screen. No it'll crank, no RPM, no fuel pump. I can jump the wires at the fuel pump relay, and the fuel pump will run. So I don't know yet.
SPEAKER_02Uh a lot of times uh it won't kick the fuel pump until it sees a crank signal. It's supposed to run a five-second prime. Do you have a crank sensor issue, you think? I think it might be. Yeah, when it when it's start. Yeah, yeah, yeah. When you first power it on, you should get the but once you crank, you so yeah, you you probably you might have two problems going on.
SPEAKER_05I believe I have two separate problems. I'm just not so everything is unhooked, unplugged. I'm gonna throw the battery on the charger because when cranking, I only have nine volts at the fuel pump relay. So I do know that terminators are picky, so at that point I said fine. Neutral? Skillers are moving your ass. Right? You're moving one way or another. And I everything's rearranged, everything's inside. I will empty the van out this week, get it done, because I have other paying jobs to come in.
SPEAKER_00Paying jobs are awesome.
SPEAKER_05Problem is, is I didn't get any of my shit caught up. I still don't have a trailer trailer with brakes. I still don't have my recovery box back in this in the truck with all its what do you decide to do with the trailer? Just now buy a new I don't know yet. Chad gave Annie hope that we could fix it, so I'm just worried about yeah, fixes it, it works, then all of a sudden it quits working.
SPEAKER_04But yeah, no brakes going on the mountains with two jeeps. I really don't know.
SPEAKER_02It depends if you can figure out why it's not working.
SPEAKER_00Like maybe a wire problem, or is it something deeper?
SPEAKER_02Or if it, you know, it might just be a seal for one of the pistons in there. And if you can't do it, oh no, it's wiring.
SPEAKER_05So you shake the wire. You haven't seen it. I'll show you down there. You will be like, what the fuck dumb design is that? I kind of explained it to you last night around the campfire, but it we can move the wires. I can power the motor, the pump motor, directly. And if you wiggle the wires just right, the the motor will run. So you just need to figure out brake fluid intrusion break fluid intrusion into the motor. I'm not real keen on what else did it brake fluid can be pretty hard on shit.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Brake fluid can be well, it can be real hard on shit.
SPEAKER_05And the problem is, is there's only like three companies that make electric hydraulic pumps for trailer brakes. So I'll probably just have to end up ordering this the one I need. Yeah, it'll probably work for fucking 10 years or whatever. It's gonna work longer because it's gonna get mounted properly because that one wasn't mounted properly. It says mount it in a toolbox outside of direct weather contact. Oh, it was. They mounted it right up in the fucking neck on the top of the trailer. It's definitely getting weather contact. Yes, it did. Or it was. So did I did the guy know it when he sold it to me? I don't know. I don't really care. Everything else on the trailer's great. Yeah, so I gotta spend another thousand bucks on it. I still don't wouldn't have the trailer I do anywhere else. At least it ain't like JB3. You guys, did I tell you about a skid loader? He told me about it. Did he tell you about it? Isn't JCB that you know he bought that he got a good deal on? It's probably gonna be eight to ten grand thousand eight to ten grand repair
Scout EFI Gremlins And Low Voltage
SPEAKER_05bill up the JCB dollar when he gets it back.
SPEAKER_02What was the original cause that it went up there for?
SPEAKER_05Uh it was hydraulics were overheating. He couldn't like run the any of his attachments more than five minutes, and overheat was going off. I think even just driving around like scooping dirt, it would start. Oh, the hydraulics warning we go. Turned out the pump's bad. Oh, and it was heating up the bypassing and heating up all the flu heating the fluid, so they had to put a whole new hydraulic pump in it. Wonder if the guy he bought it from knew that. I don't know. He's thinking so. But it also I also went, oh, well, I guess I'm not using your attachments anymore.
SPEAKER_00That metal flake everywhere.
SPEAKER_05That metal flake was going through.
SPEAKER_04Oh, he's gonna have to put some kind of a filter system on the well they're they're gonna flush everything out.
SPEAKER_05I said you better flush all your implements out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you better scoop all the attachments up and take them up there too. Yeah, because how do you flush them? I mean, you have to have some kind of a pump that would be just take the hydraulic couplers off and then you just keep flushing fluid and then just jump on the flucket gallons and gallons and gallons of fluid. You I mean you I would imagine you'd have to go through 10, 15 gallons and attachment to make to even he was gonna check with them and see what they thought. So isn't that what a lot of the road isn't that what a lot of the road crews do? Is it gets like one piece of equipment attached to it and it's mounted to it for life, right?
SPEAKER_05That's why that's why if uh you want to use Rich's push pounder, uh, he's like, uh you can take my whole skid loader, you're not hooking any other skid loader to it. I yeah, it's not a bad idea. Uh well his his brother-in-law's brother-in-law owns uh McDermott excavating, and they had one one piece of one attachment take out three two skid loaders after the skid loader it was on had a pump failure. They lost three skid loaders. Oof. So now it's they any job they bid, if they need a skid loader, there's enough in that bid to buy a new skid loader to use on that job with whatever attachment they're gonna need on it, and then it stays that way. I'm kind of thinking I might just call a fence company and be like, pound all the posts.
SPEAKER_04Call hire and say, do it. Right, because that's cheaper than buying a skid loader.
SPEAKER_02Well, if if we've got those pneumatic post pounders, too.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, otherwise, if Rich said we could use a skid loader, no, right?
SPEAKER_02We'll see. So doing the fence yet this year.
SPEAKER_05I just said I doubt it.
SPEAKER_04Kelly Kelly's baby donkey needs a I'm not thinking I'm gonna have any fucking free time for a while.
SPEAKER_05So uh are you going can can we I people said, well, you kind of alluded to something, but that was my week. It's technically not official.
SPEAKER_04I mean it's official, so but I haven't told any like many people. Okay, I can't.
SPEAKER_05I mean or you live with patrons, so only patrons know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean I can um doesn't really matter. I mean, I I signed the paperwork, I accepted that job, so I've start the stuff.
SPEAKER_02They just haven't announced it yet.
SPEAKER_04They've announced it at work. I mean, anybody that works at works knows about it. So Chad, open that damn page.
SPEAKER_05It's official. Um sidetrack brain. Before before we get into Geyer's adventure, we do have to talk about uh something that's going on right now that I I had alluded to a lot of people that we would they needed to listen to find out more information.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I know I don't know what you're talking about, but I remember you alluding to that. So yeah, that was my week. So got a call on Friday on the way to Wyatt's Warriors. Uh verbally accepted, Monday officially accepted, Tuesday they announced it. So yeah, I start the sixth, so I'm gonna be nice pop a little bit busy with work. Uh but this is a job you've this is a position you've wanted for a long time. I've wanted this for a long time, and now I've got it. So now it's gonna be just getting going on it, be busy doing that.
SPEAKER_02The nice thing now is now you have the authority to make people do all the shit that they were supposed to have been doing for a long time, yeah? Maybe. I mean, uh it's it's gonna be more I think of a or maybe not authority, maybe that's not the word for it.
SPEAKER_04I think it's just respect my authority.
SPEAKER_00I think it's just you don't have to wait for others to get the ball rolling.
SPEAKER_04Right. That and it's just now it's like we can make we can make plans and implement plans because it's more mine.
SPEAKER_02It goes through more of it, goes it's it's mainly going through you instead of waiting for three other people to approve it.
SPEAKER_04So I'm super excited about that. So that was I traveled for it for my you know current position on Tuesday, was gone all day. Wednesday. I said I don't I don't remember this week went by so fast. Was Wednesday night it was supposed to rain? There was one night it was supposed to rain. Caleb was freaking out, needed to get the the Corvette put somewhere. So we've got Rich's Jeep, Icky, and the Corvette shoved into two stalls in my garage. Can't hardly walk through it, it's a disaster. Don't remember what I did on Thursday or Friday because life's crazy. Yesterday I went kayaking with my buddies from Cedar Rapids, haven't seen them. It's horrible. Like some of my best friends, I haven't seen them since my birthday last September. So uh Clinton's like, hey, let's go let's go kayaking sometime this summer, still. I'm like, we better get it done right now. I've got this weekend open. Let's do it. So did that yesterday. So now six hours in the water hanging out with them. It was fun. It's different than it used to be. I think I took four beers with me. I used to take about a case and a half on the water. So it was different, it was a different situation. And then today helped Caleb move a couch that was grandpa's. Uh, they needed to get it out of the his room at the home. So they were trying to figure out where they were gonna take it. And Caleb's like, well, if no one wants it, I'll take it. So we went and got that. Uh came home, mowed lawn, cleaned weeds and stuff up around. Might need to borrow JB3's tilt trailer. Because we put that mouth or that uh right here above the bottle.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I see it. What are we chasing? Bug crawling down from the ceiling. Anyways, so uh uh tilt trailer, which tilt trailer?
SPEAKER_04The one that's on your truck right now. Okay, because when we put that uh maxima or whatever that Nissan is on my trail, didn't it drag the bumper pretty hard? So I need to scoop that out of my yard, figure out where the lady wants it, and I'm dumping it in her fucking yard because I'm tired of it being in the room.
SPEAKER_05Let me know what night you do it. We'll just come over and do it. Because I got the winch having loaded up, hooked up. That's how I unloaded the truck.
SPEAKER_04Kelly was supposed to find out where it needs to be because I'm gonna get it there because I want it out of my yard. You want to load that other thing up and just take it to the scrapyard? I would like to, but the tractor pulled it today. Nice barely. Yeah. But I got it pulled out of the future shop area because that's what I was trying to do today after I got the lawn
Trailer Brakes Fail And The Price Tag
SPEAKER_04mode. I put all my posts in like I think it's the shop is square, the shop layout's square, but I'm not 100% sure if it's square with the house. So I just came 20 feet off of the corner of the house and then squared the other three points. The Amish show up to put to build it, you say I want it parallel square to the house. How are the Amish gonna be able to do it? They don't have all the fancy tools. Don't you have to have fancy tools? Oh, they probably they probably got they probably got an eye.
SPEAKER_05They got transit and all that.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah. Well, I know if you have Benny doing, he does. Yeah. See, I just I want to make sure it's no one's ever gonna probably see it, but I want to make sure the house and the shop are square with each other. That they're on the same plane. Yes.
SPEAKER_05If you want to catch him, go to JB3's house this week. Is he over there? Uh he was there last week and there this week. Doing additions. On two sheds.
SPEAKER_04Additions already? Lean to's.
SPEAKER_05So you know the you know the little the little shed that was there that he moved to build the big garage? Yep. That's the skill order shed. Well, he didn't like his attachments sitting outside, so he's having been built a lean to off the south side of it that all the attachments can sit in there. So he can just drive in, grab what attachment he wants. It'll be like a oh, I think he's doing like a rack, so it'll be like two rack high. Yeah. But everything will be under there. Just grab what you need and go. And then I think he's stealing the rest of the shed so it matches the other buildings, and then on the end of the new garage, that's getting I think it's 15 wide, as deep as the garage is wide. Uh, so he can put the snowbills in the back, and Dumpy can park inside. Nice. So hell yeah. Yeah, I don't so you can't see them if you drive by, but they're up there. But they had to pause on before they put the the stringers on the roof of the lean to because one one of Benny's boys was like, uh Joe, that tree leans way over. And they got to looking at it, and it's like, yeah, if that thing falls, it definitely will take out the lean to and it can take out the back of the garage. And dad goes, you know what sits right under that inside the garage? I said, Yeah, a Malibu. Do I need to take the Malibu out while they take it down? He goes, No, he goes, Benny's brother-in-law or whatever's got is coming, they have a big man left. They'll go up and they'll actually take it down in in sections. Yeah. I said, Okay. So don't smash my fucking car.
SPEAKER_04Right. I'm actually run over there and drop the plans off because I've got the plans all printed out what I want. Yeah. I just need to see what it's gonna cost. And what like 40 feet doesn't seem very deep when it's just looking at it like in the grass. And then you like look in here and it's like Kelly Kelly laughed at me because I took the lawnmower and I put the the deck all the way down as low as scalp the shape of the shop. Probably, no. So I'd look at it and I'm like, it doesn't seem like it's that deep. But then I look at yours out here and it's like, it's about that. I mean, it just it feels weird. Uh no, mine doesn't look like it's you're 60 by 40 now, right?
SPEAKER_0164 by 40. 64. Yep. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04That way, yeah. You sure it's not 50? No, it's 40. 40. Mine is not. Like what I've got marked out.
SPEAKER_05Mine did not look like it when we laid it out either.
SPEAKER_02Sometimes an extra eight to ten feet would be nice on the back of that though, wouldn't it?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's gonna have mine's gonna have an extra 12 feet on the back of it. It's gonna have a 12-foot lean to across the whole back.
SPEAKER_05I 40's nice. Um you just have to be more diligent about what you park and what what you let be here.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because it fills up quick.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, especially when everybody else's projects are here. Right. Which I don't mind. It just can't have so many at once.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it fills up real quick. So yeah, so I'm gonna. I don't know if it'll I know it's not gonna get done this fall. I wanted it to, but I don't think it's gonna happen. You could get the shell up. Well, I gotta get the house finished first so they can do their their shit. And then Oh, they haven't done that yet? They can't do the appraisal on it, final appraisal till I finish the house.
SPEAKER_02Just tell them to come appraise it. They'll appraise it for more than enough. Yeah, you're gonna be more than enough. I just don't want to risk it. Yeah, it'll be for more. What are they gonna do? Take your house away?
SPEAKER_04Well, they're not gonna take my house away, but I'm right.
SPEAKER_02You'll so they're you're still gonna have a loan no matter what.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I'm not worried about that. I want to make sure the appraise is high enough that I can say, hey, what about putting this shed next to it?
SPEAKER_05Well, hey, it's gonna appraise high enough because as soon as you get the shed, they're gonna reappraise it.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_05And ask me how I know. Oh, I know. So thank goodness this appraises for about double what I owe on it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's so I gotta get back working on that, but Patreon topic.
SPEAKER_05Build the timelines. Remember that for Patreon.
SPEAKER_02Someone should write that down.
SPEAKER_05I don't have anything to write with. Put it on your phone.
SPEAKER_04We might remember it. Build timelines. If we don't remember, we don't remember it.
SPEAKER_05No. I'll put it on the notes. Chad, what what do you have going on? You had a w I forgot something I did this week, but it was your event, so uh it caused you to buy more equipment for the van.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. So Ethan had a uh flat tire when he was out getting his senior pictures taken. So I was like, Chris, do you have one of those Milwaukee portable air compressors? I say, nope, but I got a Jeep.
SPEAKER_05I got a Jeep with a compressor on it.
SPEAKER_00So he came over and filled it up, and then we found the leak. Young Ethan was apparently sliding corners with the e-brake on gravel.
SPEAKER_05Oh three tire plugs, barely slowed it down enough so Chad could drive it home.
SPEAKER_02Oh he admitted uh e-brake.
SPEAKER_00He didn't say no. I didn't do that.
SPEAKER_05Uh there was enough comments from little brother that I think yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The the absence of an answer is confirmation.
SPEAKER_00Yes, usually the uh driver's side tire also went flat while we're waiting for tires to show and TPMS sensors and all that stuff. So it now has four new to him tires that are pretty well new and uh four new sensors.
SPEAKER_04So is he gonna learn a lesson on power slice?
SPEAKER_00He seems to be taking it a lot easier on the gravel.
SPEAKER_02It's not as fun now. He's got traction. Well, it it the first time you buy tires, and even if they are used, it's like, oh, that hurt.
SPEAKER_00I I didn't pay for them, he bought them.
SPEAKER_02So that's what I mean. It's like, oh, that oh shit. I always and I know he knows how uh expensive tires can be because he had to price them in auto ownership. So I know he knew, but you never really until you feel it in your checkbook once.
SPEAKER_00So he got some uh Mastercraft Coarser tires, kind of a AT tire.
SPEAKER_05Yep. I'll trade any of you. I'll buy your tire, you buy my tires.
SPEAKER_00I said he only had to pay 200 bucks for them.
SPEAKER_04For all four?
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_04That ain't bad. I priced out ridge grapplers today.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I did two yet. We need five of them. That sucks. Uh if you buy the one you you were looking at. The back two still are KO2s?
SPEAKER_04No. Just the just the spare. Kelly's exact
Skid Loader Repairs And Attachment Fallout
SPEAKER_04words on that is it looks like a pussy jeep. When can we put bigger tires on it? I'm like, as soon as you if you buy it, as soon as you get it, we can that's whenever. Annie's done that twice. She did it with her TJ. She does not want it to look like a mall crawler.
SPEAKER_02And she does she want Well then she needs to let you take it out in the woods and put some dents in it.
SPEAKER_04She doesn't want to do that. Uh that that uh she wants a different bumper. That blemish. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Uh that top's been off.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's what I'm saying. The top's been off and dropped. Yeah. That's what I've that's what I'm figuring happened with it. 100%. But the doors don't look like they've uh they were very careful with the doors if they took them off. The doors never been off. But the top's been off, I think.
SPEAKER_05I'll bet the doors have never been off because that or they're it's some somebody took them off and then took the time to put the nuts back on the bottom. Yeah, because the nuts are all on because we tell everybody do not put those nuts back on.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the nuts are all still on it. There's no scratches around the doors.
SPEAKER_05The first time you take the nuts off, it twists the threads off, anyways.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Because I looked at two that the doors were beat to shit. So you can tell they've been off numerous times by people that couldn't lift them and dropped them on the corner. Like that's the first thing I checked, was all the edges of the doors. I mean, I know it's gonna get scratched and dinged and banged up, but it won't for a little while though. I'm gonna be a lot more careful with it when I take parts off of it than most people will be. I she said the scuff on the back doesn't bother her, she's not that big of a deal. She likes that better than the white one with the black roof that I found.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So I like the gray better.
SPEAKER_04Everybody in the house likes the gray one better except for me. So I'm losing that. I like the gray one, but I like the black top to me is easier to take.
SPEAKER_05I love those blue accents.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's gonna be it's gonna be fun if she gets it.
SPEAKER_05But Dyer's gonna love it.
SPEAKER_02I don't have to love it as long as Dr. Keller loves it.
SPEAKER_04That's the only person that really matters.
SPEAKER_02I just think she'd love a Bronco more.
SPEAKER_04She would, but if you go look at the price of the Bronco that she wants and the price of the Jeep that she wants, it's looking cool ain't cheap, man. Looking cool ain't cheap. It's not for looking cool, it's for so we can take it out. She's even like, hey, we could probably make it to Colorado before it snow flies if we get it. So I don't know. Might take the last minute vacay and bomb out the mountains quick. We'll see.
SPEAKER_00Ended up uh making another Timu purchase. So because of uh Ethan's ordeal, I got to thinking I don't have a spare tire. I should probably have a tire patch kit and a way to blow up those tires if I get a flat. Yes, you should. So I got a Vivor onboard air compressor that looks just like what like you guys have in your rigs, right? Just cheaper.
SPEAKER_04I'm excited to see how it works. I'm actually jealous because his is orange. Yeah, because if that thing works as good as what mine does, I'll probably buy one of those for another one.
SPEAKER_00And then I got a you're gonna need tool.
SPEAKER_04That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_00I got a 13,500-pound Vivor winch um loaded with synthetic rope already.
SPEAKER_04So seemed pretty good quality because that should upload it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I didn't pull all the way out and look at it, but it looks we mounting that in the bumper. I think so.
SPEAKER_04She's heavy as heavy as hell, is it?
SPEAKER_00I don't think it's as heavy as the ward.
SPEAKER_04I don't think they're yeah.
SPEAKER_05They're for the money, it's gonna be a little lighter weight. And that is where you get your capacity.
SPEAKER_00So it looks like it's maybe got four speeds to it.
SPEAKER_05Really?
SPEAKER_00So there's there's four different numbers on it, ranging from like you know, 13.5 for the slowest speed to like four or six thousand.
SPEAKER_05That could be with wraps on the rope. That could be so, or it could be that it's I don't know. I'm I guess you see it.
SPEAKER_00I I didn't look at the destructions or anything to figure anything out, but so got those two things for a grand total of no, it was like $570 in the cart, and I got $350 back in cash. Went right to my PayPal account. So I can't beat that at all. Really pretty cheap.
SPEAKER_05Smart shopping.
SPEAKER_02So Dust Chad has Timu figured out.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, maybe I'm just gonna start. Chad, I need this. I hate Timu.
SPEAKER_00I I do too, but I'm liking it more now.
SPEAKER_05You like it more now? It's one of those deals is you you buy it and you you can't have grant grand expectations of it. Right. But for a lot of stuff, it's being made in the same fucking factory as everything else. Yep.
SPEAKER_04So far, like the only thing I've got from team of the so Chad's clamps that he got were awesome. But I bought like a like one of those little jump pack, like jump starter packs. That feels like a toy. It's like cheap. It never fucking like you jump car one time and it's dead. I'm just not I'm just not a fan. And what I paid for that one, I was almost gonna pay for one of the nice Amazon ones.
SPEAKER_00I I got a cheap jump pack also, and honestly, it it works okay. It'll it'll jump a vehicle three or four times before you gotta maybe recharge it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, might be a different one than the one I got.
SPEAKER_00So it's it restarts the red band. There's only dead dead. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05There's only like 30 different versions on there. Right. And then you go back tomorrow and there'll be different versions again. Yep.
SPEAKER_00So the the next couple things that I'm gonna look into is they've got several different versions of like a Jackery power unit, that type thing, battery unit, um, and a diesel heater.
SPEAKER_04Nice. Where did your diesel heater? Timu wasn't Vivor. Oh, Vivor.
SPEAKER_00Oh, there's a lot of Vivor stuff on Timu. Is there?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, it was like a hundred bucks. And it, I mean, for your little for your van, it'd be perfect to keep that. Yeah. Uh I mean, it raised uh from you know my garage from teens or twenties up to you know high 30s, low forties. And that's a significantly bigger space than it was designed for.
SPEAKER_06Right. And chance to have a sonic driver.
SPEAKER_02And it's not like I'm sealed up either into like the garage door's got an engine of gap on one side at the bottom.
SPEAKER_04Line the hole inside of that thing with cedar chan. Just line the hole inside the city.
SPEAKER_00I was kind of thinking, you know, deer hunting season might be fun just to go out and camp the night before and we're warm with the heater. I told him six bells comes around when we just climb out and get the deer stick.
SPEAKER_05I told him if he had the other one converted to the pole behind camper, then technically he wouldn't even have he'd if he unhooked it from the vehicle, he
New Job News And Back To Routine
SPEAKER_05wouldn't even have to get out to shoot. True. It could be a deer blind.
SPEAKER_04Camouflage it.
SPEAKER_05Get those 12 inch by 12, get some 12-inch by 12-inch uh hunter orange magnetic signs, a slap on the sides.
SPEAKER_00Just put a street cone up on top.
SPEAKER_05That too. Don't shoot me. You're telling that each if it's a deer, if it's an enclosed deer blind, it has to have a 12-inch by 12-inch square, blaze orange square on every side. So but just you got the front seats there, the one spins around, you just gotta put a power, uh, a nice quiet power motor on the slider, or just boys. Go drag that back.
SPEAKER_02Say we just run the winch line out to it and drag it back.
SPEAKER_00They would just have you know, like the the tilt windows, we just unhook them so we can just push it all the way out.
SPEAKER_04All the way out. Yeah, that would work too. Put a turret on the top of it.
SPEAKER_02As long as the as long as the hinges are just right so that they the glass doesn't there's three screws on the bottom, but I think when you undo that, you can just push the window out.
SPEAKER_00The hinge is right at the very, very top.
SPEAKER_02I just didn't know if it was down a little lower and the glass.
SPEAKER_00It's nothing fancy for a hinge, it's just I don't know, like a canvas hinge or something. It's yeah, it's not what you would expect, we'll put it that way.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Um, started back to work, so lots and lots and lots of meetings. So I'm kind of ready for kids instead of meetings.
SPEAKER_02Don't blame me there. Yeah, I I looked at my emails on Friday, and I had like 150 to 200 emails. Went I almost did select all delete and say and like send any of them that were actually important.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that was gross. Oh, that just made me like dread school starting is seeing that whole stack of emails after not looking at them for a week.
SPEAKER_06No.
SPEAKER_00That's why emails suck. Emails suck, but I didn't do anything out in the shop. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Just I've been that way too.
SPEAKER_00I've just been I I think I'm going to make an attempt when I get home from school. I just go out in the shop for two hours. So 3 30 to 5 30. And then when I go in and cook, when I'm done cooking, I'm done for the night. Yep, rapidly. Maybe if I come over here or something, that's fine, but I gotta stay in work mode because as soon as I'm out of work mode, then I'm not gonna go back.
SPEAKER_02Did you choose 7 30 to 3 30, Chad?
SPEAKER_05You uh you in my inspiration, Chad, because I should do that too. I have a bad habit of oh, go in and grab a bite to eat.
SPEAKER_00Then honestly, I'm I'm more likely to be like, you know what? I didn't finish that and I want to, and I might go back out there for a minute. Might go back out, yeah. Right. But if I wait until you know 9 30 when everybody goes to bed, I'm not going out there.
SPEAKER_05No, yeah. If it's past 7 30.
SPEAKER_02It's like we're it's like we're getting too old for that shit.
SPEAKER_05I'm at the point where if it's past 7.30, it's like I'm not going out there. Sometimes if it's past 7, it's just like and I'm at the point I got, you know, I like I said, I got a couple paying jobs I gotta get done, but I'm at the point where everything gets here, there's no deadlines. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But say the uh grass mowing's been a little out of control lately with all the rain we've gotten.
SPEAKER_02Oh my gosh, I mowed before we left and I came back, and I'm like, uh it's disgustingly long.
SPEAKER_00The neighbor showed me how he is striping his lawn though, and I can modify that from my tractor. Oh, a little rubber is like a rubber piece of like something you'd maybe see on the bottom of a a cheap, I don't know, snow pusher or something that he bolted to some angle on the back of his deck so it drags on the ground.
SPEAKER_05I might have some.
SPEAKER_00It's like uh probably half-inch thick piece of rubber. So he uses a stripe it then? That's what he uses to stripe it. And my uh track, my the back of my deck is actually flat. His is not. So I could actually mount it right to the deck or maybe a piece of angle or whatever, but now I can aggressively stripe and piss people off.
SPEAKER_05I've never got the striping thing.
SPEAKER_04I think it looks cool, but I don't want to spend the time to do it.
SPEAKER_00So say if I if it doesn't take any longer, awesome.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm not gonna go over it twice like some people do, but my yard is so odd shaped that it's like you got so many things to go around that that's my problem.
SPEAKER_04Like, just I mean, I could make the front yard look nice and the backyard look nice, but like the south lawn?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh man, that's like the White House. You got the South Lawn, the North Lawn.
SPEAKER_04The South Lawn is just parking. South one?
SPEAKER_02When are you gonna have a UFC fight out in the South Lawn? Whenever.
SPEAKER_04Oh God.
SPEAKER_00So are you are you gonna call the shop the ballroom?
SPEAKER_04The ballroom. Good. The ballroom.
SPEAKER_02That's what I call my underwear. The ballroom.
SPEAKER_05Uh God, that thing's why is that running?
SPEAKER_00Seems to be running longer than it's because the
Core Voting Twist With Sponsor Picks
SPEAKER_00podcast is on.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's pretty much about the right timing, yeah. So, real quick, before we get into Gears mission here, because we've about 30 minutes in. Um we have a we had two listeners that applied for core. We're gonna talk more about core on the Patreon. But I made a comment because Jesse was like Well I didn't I didn't get the win. Or I didn't get the votes, but I still gotta get a recovery point on the continuous ones like that. And I just said, hey, you might want to listen to the episodes. Or listen to the podcast this week. I didn't tell them which one. I didn't figure I should probably. I I f I felt guilty if I plugged HTG over on the OTR. But anyways, um this has not been announced yet. This is the only place I'm saying it for right now, so they don't listen to this, they're not gonna they ask me about uh one of the cronies suggested this, and I said, Yep, I like the idea. I'm not gonna say which crony suggested it, but the suggestion was that the our loan sponsor for this year, because there's two sponsors technically. One said the only one that has stepped up and actually sent money said, hey, we're sponsoring. That one is going to get to pick one of the rigs that does not get voted in. And after they pick their pick, because they are not able to attend, but they still sponsored. And the cronies are going to pick a crony pick. So Jesse, you're not out of it yet. You could have a chance yet.
SPEAKER_02It could happen. Um there's been some pretty cool rigs on there already.
SPEAKER_00You know, I kind of find it funny, like certain ones like that. That Bronco only got like nine votes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. The picture of that one sucked, though.
SPEAKER_00I'd say honestly, the the picture is huge, and people are throwing some weird pictures up.
SPEAKER_05Those are the pict the we took the pictures they sent, and then had to choose from there. Because Andrew's like, didn't they send it? I said, I gave you the two best pictures they sent.
SPEAKER_02And I put together the write-ups. You couldn't you couldn't even tell the picture is kind of I mean, like, people, I mean, I read all the thing, but like most people don't. If if you're gonna look, you gotta have a good picture of your rig doing something, even if it's just a side profile of it, or you know, but a clear picture of the vehicle, not something you took off your flip phone in 1920.
SPEAKER_04Because unless you read that in 2004, no one knows it's a new body style bronco, right? I did because I read the thing and I'm like, that'd be cool to see a new body style bronco out there wheeling.
SPEAKER_05So it was a hundred percent random matchup, yep. And Jesse got thrown against a cool samurai. When I seen it, I'm like, damn, why'd Jesse?
SPEAKER_04Because I like the samurai, but I was vote for Jesse because I want to hang out with him for the weekend, you know.
SPEAKER_05And then and that that samurai is actually kind of local to Dubuque. It's cool as shit.
SPEAKER_02Um, yeah, it is that Sammy's cool.
SPEAKER_05And then the Bronco got thrown up against. Did you read the write-up on that Ford? Uh-huh. And he's local.
SPEAKER_02That the the Ranger, the Ranger, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And that's cool as shit, too. But I was I wanted a new Bronco, and I don't know either one of those people, so I went off the vehicle.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. That I've I've wheeled with that ranger in all of its iterations. Yeah. I've I've winched it back over onto its wheels before, but so I kind of refrained from I've been trying to play very neutral. Yeah. Um, but it his picture was better than the other. And there that's what most people want off of.
SPEAKER_04That's the problem. He I mean, he the dude in the Bronx got stomped.
SPEAKER_02Um, it looked like it was taken on a f a flip phone camera from 2004. So they couldn't even really tell if it was just like. Maybe it was that's the only picture that that guy had. Like maybe it was one of the cool little slider phones with the full keyboard. Like maybe it was that kind of a phone.
SPEAKER_00So you couldn't even see if it was like a built Bronco or like a standard Bronco.
SPEAKER_05He actually he actually entered two vehicles. Uh the other one didn't qualify by tire size. Didn't have tires big enough. Yeah, you only had 31s on it, so we couldn't. We have a 35 metal just for what?
SPEAKER_04For out there.
SPEAKER_02Um yeah. Unless you're unless your name's Cody. Court is not Cody's on 36s, so not the first year.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he's always been on 36s.
SPEAKER_02Has he?
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I thought he was on 33s the first year.
SPEAKER_00They just don't look big compared to everybody else.
SPEAKER_05No, he hasn't been on 33s in five or six years. It was just before. You've been on wheeling events with or wheeling at riches with him on thirty. He was on 33s. But uh I was just trying to get you the shop site here. Alex Grunder in the Samurai one, Joe Linth in the the uh Ranger one, uh we got Dan White and Britt Gamerdinger. Is that tomorrow's? That's today's. Oh, I don't did I vote for today?
SPEAKER_00So that was the Dodge truck. That's the Dodge Truck Wrangler or something.
SPEAKER_05Scrambler. It's a scrambler.
SPEAKER_00So is that like a truck version?
SPEAKER_05That's a CJ, it's like a CJ7, but long wheelbase. Okay. Longer wheelbase.
SPEAKER_02Um like what uh oh what's his name lives on the corner in your old house.
SPEAKER_05Um what he's got. Which that's only a straight-on shot, so unless you read on it, you don't know that it's a scrambler. But where are they at? What's with the voting at oh it's 97 to 47, the Rams winning. So got till 9 a.m. tomorrow. But not that you're here, this will help you. But what do we got? And then after that, um Trey Garrett and Jason Dolphin, and then Todd Diebel and Dwight Frost Frotzkey, and then Trepto got the bye, and that was a hundred percent grand wheel. I have the video if you wanted to contest it. I said Ricky and uh Cody were gonna be on this in the hot seat though, because I'm like, I can't just put two names on this wheel and let it spin. So it went, I had Cody Picks, Mark Trepito, Ricky Picks, uh Jesse Camp. Because I said, well, we had to have one person have a bye, and I'm like, I'm gonna give the bye to one of the two loyal listeners for HTG. And maybe some of these other guys listen, I don't know. I just know that Jesse and Mark. They're active in the Patreon chat. I don't I don't even remember what the other two rigs are but or coming up yet. The other four rigs coming up, but that'll get rid of it.
SPEAKER_04Todd, I think I'm friends with Todd. He was on, he was a he was with five. Was he with was he the guy that was with Reed a few years ago? I believe so, yes. I can't keep track of everybody.
SPEAKER_05Um but I Trey Garrett. I think I know he's an OTR listener, and I think he might have been somebody's co-dog at one point. I don't remember. I can't keep um I can't either straight. Um I know that that Brent's from like Marion, Cedar Rapids, Dan's from Indiana or somewhere, I think. I remember. So but it was a nice mix of yeah, you know, rigs. I only had core. We only had two rigs that got thrown out because they didn't have the tire size.
SPEAKER_02The Bronco guys, JK didn't have tire size, and the would it have made a difference if they'd have put in there that it will have 35s by core or would they? Maybe, but like would that have got them kicked out? No, I think they could have.
SPEAKER_05No, I would if they were gonna have 35s by core.
SPEAKER_02You know, because like if someone didn't have tow points, you're like, I'll have them by the time core. You know, but if they would have put that in the application, I think why not let them, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_05And the other guy I knew he wasn't gonna have three, even the way he applied, he tried using the uh ask Chris, he's my mechanic. JB3 didn't got thrown out too. So I threw my own dad out of the vote. Threw him out on his butt.
SPEAKER_00I mean, if he I half expected him to apply with a rental jeep, but I mean that that old 40s Jeep would probably do it the way it sits.
SPEAKER_05Probably. Yeah, it don't run either.
SPEAKER_04So the rental Jeep is halfway vacuumed out. I was doing that yesterday. How many times have you emptied the vacuum? Uh so I swept everything out, like all the mud out, okay, and like put it in my hands and dumped it out. You know what I mean? Like I scooped as much as I could up with my hands first. But that's probably gonna be the cleanest that thing's ever been. And long time I'm getting it clean. How hard are those sea covers to take off? Not very thinking about taking the seat covers off and washing them because they are muddy. So yeah, I'm getting it all cleaned up and I'm gonna drive it back to Dubuque. I'm actually gonna probably put my trailer and drive it to Dubuque because I drove it to town to wash it and about died. So whatever, whatever rattle, like whatever was causing the slight death wobble, it is not slight anymore. Kelly was like, holy fuck, what's going on? I'm like, it's a Jeep thing, and you paid extra for it. It'll happen for years too. It's been that way forever. It's the caster's not really. So I'm gonna probably load it onto a trailer, and someday I'll just like drive it up over here at work, and like, here you go.
SPEAKER_05I can bring it, take it to work too. But I want to get it all finished cleaning it first. I it might work out because I have probably gonna have to take a trailer over, anyways, because I have the battery pack out of a forklift I have to haul back to Manchester.
SPEAKER_04Okay. So I'm gonna try to get that done this week. This that's my plans this week to have that wrapped up. Yeah. So you have a parking space back? I would like to have a parking space back.
SPEAKER_05No the feeling. So, anyways, we have rambled on enough.
SPEAKER_04Typical.
SPEAKER_05Geyer,
Costa Rica Trip And Why They Went
SPEAKER_05tell us about your adventure.
SPEAKER_02Oh man, that was uh that was a pretty amazing trip. Uh, we left at uh 3 a.m. last Friday morning and got on a plane and headed for Costa Rica for a week on a mission trip with our church to um work on a language school that trains missionaries that are gonna be working in Central and South America. So uh two of the missionaries there was a family there, husband and wife, and well, there was two couples there. They were in between like semesters or something right now. Um, but there were two couples that were still two missionary couples and their kids that were still there. And one of the couples is going high, high, high up into the Andes at like 14, 15,000 feet, and that's where they'll be living once they're done. That's they'll they'll go there for four years. So I mean it's high enough up there that they're like, we'll have an oxygen tank with us full time for probably the first six months to a year. No, because it because you know the air is so thin, uh, you know, it gets so thin up there.
SPEAKER_0412,000 feet of fair plays, if you're not used to it, it gets thin.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So and uh the place that they're going, there's no running water, there's no power, there's no electricity, plumbing, like heating, and they don't heat their their homes at all. Uh because this the this tribe, they don't believe in mixing, stay warm. They don't uh you put on more clothes. Fuck they just keep putting friction. That's why the families are so big. Um, they uh they don't believe in mixing temperatures, like they would never uh uh have warm apple pie with ice cream if you don't mix hot and cold. So like when it's cold, everything's cold. When it's hot, everything's hot. So anyway, not for me, hard pass. So um, but we were uh working on classrooms um that the termites had gotten into the wood, and there was uh termite droppings, as they put it, uh falling down on the dust during the day when the is that like lucrative, like bat droppings? Uh I don't think it's lucrative like bat guano.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_02Just checking. I mean, if that was, uh maybe you missed out on a pride opportunity to the the termites are a big enough problem down there. They um the builder that built one of their apartment com their apartment buildings, so they're like first floor, second floor. Um they don't use a lot of wood down there. I'd say they just steel instead, yeah. Steel and concrete. Yeah. Um they uh used a uh wood floor of Joyce, they spanned a two by eight, twenty feet, and uh then the termites got in there, and the second floor joined the first floor, so they're almost done rebuilding that whole apartment complex or that apartment building, but um so we uh um you know we went uh like on Sunday, we went to two different churches. Uh one of them was like the ones you'd find here, Cornerstone and Radiant, and you know, where they got the screens and you know the lights and the bands, and and then the other one was uh well it wasn't like that. Uh it was pretty much uh uh it was like an old farm barn with a dirt floor. Um it wasn't a lot of the buildings in that in that area, I would say we would have just knocked them down. And they're probably living them and using them. Uh not probably living in them, they're living they are living in them. Um the uh there was no bathroom in the church, so if you had to in that church we went to, uh the church was actually half of someone's house that they let them use for the church uh what like one day a week when they're when they're having their meeting, and the gal that's the pastor in that church, she literally walks up and down the road knocking on the doors, inviting all the kids to come to this church service. It was mostly like kids 14 and under that were there. Um at that at that particular service. I couldn't believe that they could get that many young kids to sit still for two hours. Church services are minimum two hours there. And I I told them like there's no way you'd get American kids to sit for two hours straight. No way. You wouldn't get American adults to not without not without beat, not without beating them black and blue, right? Or the threat of it. Um But so if you had to go to the bathroom, you had to go use one of the people there, their their house was house. I use that term loosely because we wouldn't consider it a house. Uh I told Chris last night, I'm like, you wouldn't have trusted that thing to park your your lawnmower in it, and they're living in it. Um and I asked the guy, I'm like, how bad was it? He goes, pretty much the worst living conditions you can imagine. Uh dirt floor, no power, no electricity. The car is parked in the living room. It's like one room. And if you do have a car, you surely park it inside at night, because if you don't, it'll be on blocks and stolen. It'll be somebody else's car. It'll be somebody else's car, or the parts off of it will be somebody else's car. A lot of the people in this area are Nicaraguan immigrants. Um, because in Nicaragua, the uh minimum, the state minimum wage is five dollars a day, and in Costa Rica it's 30. Not a lot of money, but it's significantly more than what you're used to. Um but the uh the uh then Chris, this would be something you can you can sympathize with. The uh pastor at the church, her they had their property had when they say four houses, I don't know, you know, like we talking like these little shacks like this, like a normal house, and then outbuildings that they were allowing people to live in, or what however it was. But their property had four houses on it, and every one of them burned to the ground in a fire. And through all of that, she still was showing up for church every day, still going and working with the kids, and um so it was uh it was uh man, I'm like the determination on that gal to you know keep trying to reach those kids, and and because the we got the opportunity to go to um a school that had been like a Christian school, um, but they lost their funding for the school part of it. Uh, so 500 kids had to find another place to go to school. That sucks. 500 kids. And there's some public schools that are close. Um, but uh, you know, Jeepers, Chad, can you imagine what would happen if uh Lambert had 250 extra kids show up on the first day of school? Like, where do you put 250 kids? I mean, even if it's already a big school, 250 kids is a lot of kids that you gotta absorb. That's an extra 10 classrooms.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's when they start putting they start pulling the portables in, like when I was at school.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, right. Um, and it was in a pretty gang heavy area. The guy the gal that ran the school said that uh probably 50% of the people in that area end up in a gang at some point. Um and just the night before we were there, there was some gang violence and shooting, and we're pretty sure we were sit there was a group of four of us sitting out in the courtyard at the school just chatting after you know the day, just kind of talking about the day. And I'm like, I'll bet you that was all the sirens and sirens we heard the night before because it was about the right time that we probably heard the police and ambulance response to it. But said it's kind of a weird symbiotic relationship that they have with the gangs, the gangs protect the school, you know, because they're you know, a lot of the gang members' kids went to that school, but to get into that school, you know, so now it's basically just a Christian daycare. Kids can be there from 6 a.m. to six p.m.
Churches And Life Without Basic Utilities
SPEAKER_02Um and you have to meet one of three criteria to send your child there. You can't have electricity or water, or you have a dirt floor. If you have one of those three, you can send your kid there. Almost everybody there hits all three. No running water, no electricity, and dirt floor in your house. But I tell you what, those are some of the freaking happiest kids I've seen. I was gonna say, probably like they were, but you look at where they came from, and and I just kept thinking to myself, I'm like, how crappy was their living conditions before where they came here and are like, oh my gosh, this is so much better. But I think Nicaragua's significantly more violent, sure. Um, but got uh, you know, it was uh, you know, as a non-Spanish speaker myself, uh, which by the way, I I really wished I would have worked harder at that before we left because uh it would have made the interactions a lot better if I knew more. Um but uh uh sat down with my phone and Google Translate with uh three little boys, three boys that are probably I don't know, eight, nine, ten years old. And uh sat there and talked to them for you know they thought he was a man from space with his little computer in his hand, right? Uh um and uh you know, just chat with them on who their favorite soccer players were typical Ronaldo, Messi. Like, so who are you cheering for in the World Cup? They're like, Espana. They won. I'm like, there wasn't a single Costa Rican fan here. Like, you guys weren't cheering on Costa Rica. Found out later. That's a little bit of a sore subject because Costa Rica didn't qualify for the World Cup.
SPEAKER_03What a dick!
SPEAKER_05What like what a weird game? Imagine if those kids saw the house he lives in. They would have thought he was president.
SPEAKER_02So, um, but we uh met so many cool people on that trip. Um, you know, the uh one of the the other missionary couple that's there, um Danielle and Esteban. I love saying that name. Esteban. Um they met while she was on uh like a travel abroad thing, and when she told her parents, like, yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna go on this trip and uh you know be a uh missionary in Central America, and her dad goes, that's fine, but don't bring home one of those little Mexican boys as a husband. And a state button goes, and I am not Mexican, I am Costa Rican. I was okay.
SPEAKER_00Not to interrupt, but is that the one you got?
SPEAKER_02Uh mine is white, but it looks very close to it.
SPEAKER_00How how many kilowatts is yours?
SPEAKER_02Um, I would have to I wonder if I can pull it up in my I I work on another deal. So have you ever I'll I'll I'll I'll look that up in a little bit.
SPEAKER_04Have you ever like can you imagine doing that full time for a living? Like doing that for full time, like doing the mission thing. My sister, my sister did it for four or five years.
SPEAKER_02So that's crazy. This kind of mission trip was right up my alley where we had to go fix things. There was j were things that needed to be fixed, things that needed to be repaired. I'm not a preachy guy. Yeah, I'm not, you know. One, I know about uh Court, you might know more about the Bible than I do. Like, yeah, you know, I just haven't been a fucking stretch, bud. I just haven't been in it as much. Like, you know, these people that can recite Bible verses and all that. I'm like, that's not me.
SPEAKER_05Do you need that to be a mission though?
SPEAKER_02Uh if you're gonna plant churches and yeah, if you're gonna do that kind of like if you're gonna do that kind of stuff, and but like this one was all about you know, rebuilding the school and you know, and they've got all so what if you did that? It'd be fun, it'd be fun. It doesn't pay worth of crap though.
SPEAKER_01Neither does teaching.
SPEAKER_02That's true, but I think teaching still pays better than being a missionary, probably. Um, when I was talking to I he never said how much, like Danielle and Esteban, what they live off. He goes, You would be absolutely shocked to hear how much they live off a year. And he never said what it is, but it's not much. I'd be surprised if it's five or ten thousand dollars a year. But um, you know, gee, for scrammy, went to the farmer's market. You can live pretty cheap if you're willing to, you know, eat f if you're willing to not eat like an American, yeah, you can eat pretty cheap.
SPEAKER_04Which is the opposite of here. If you want to go to the farmer's market and eat fresh fruits and vegetables here, you're paying more than you would pay for junk food at Walmart. Right? Yeah. I mean that's the difference.
SPEAKER_02But the labor is really cheap down there.
SPEAKER_04I mean, we suck at being farmers at our house, but we have like the little tomato plant stuff that we did. The cherry tomatoes have been well about every two or three days you get a couple ripe ones, and they are awesome. Fabulous. I don't know. All our big tomatoes though are still green, like they haven't even started to turn out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, and I don't like American watermelon, but Costa Rican watermelon? That stuff is like blood red.
SPEAKER_04It still has seeds in it, too, because we haven't genetically modified it by Mr. Gates so that way you can't grow your own watermelon. Let's see if I I'm sure that's why you have seedless watermelons now. Fuck Bill Gates. Fuck Bill Gates.
SPEAKER_02Did you get the uh pictures of that Astro van I sent? Yes. That was the watermelon there. Holy shit.
SPEAKER_03That's red.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's like that's how I remember it as a child.
SPEAKER_03When we were kids, yeah.
SPEAKER_02When we were kids, it was like blood red, like the cherry or the strawberries. Oh my god, I've never had strawberries so flavorful in my life. But anyway, so yeah, we We got way more once we, you know, we showed up the first day, we got to work, and like all the demo was done in a day, and partially started putting the framing back in to do the drywall.
SPEAKER_04Because Chapman went with you, right? No. No, he didn't go on that one. I thought he did. I was like, there's a lot of construction.
SPEAKER_02There was a lot of people that had some experience doing it. Um, and like they were expecting, like, oh, wow, okay. You you you you already got that done. We thought that would have taken two days.
SPEAKER_05Well, for normal normal missionaries, yes, you get the the 18.
SPEAKER_02And they were like, Um, do you have anybody that can weld? And one of the guys goes, That's literally all I do all day. That's what I do for a living. I weld all day long. So we've got it. So then we were tearing softening and fascia out because it was wood and the termites had got into that. So um, usually other stuff is galvanized steel. So galvanized steel framing went in, and then put the softening and fascia on that. I could well galvanized stuff. Huh?
SPEAKER_04I thought you could go well.
SPEAKER_02You can, it'll just make you dumb.
SPEAKER_05You can't, you can you can, you just can't breathe. Okay, just hold the breath.
SPEAKER_02Don't breathe breathe. Okay, don't breathe the fumes. Um, so we were supposed to just do four classrooms, replace the ceiling and paint them, and we got four classrooms ceiling done and painted, about 40 foot of softening and fascia torn out and replaced, a handicap bathroom. Uh, got that operational. But he didn't put in a trucker shower. Did not put in the truck or shower. However, so now we're getting into a little bit of the day-to-day stuff. So their sewer system uh is not up to American standards. You cannot flush toilet paper or you will plug it.
SPEAKER_04That's not so they a lot of countries are though.
SPEAKER_02So they've got trash cans by the toilet that you wipe your butt and you throw the toilet paper in that. Gross. Uh, which is what I immediately thought. I'm like, I'm I I've been told my brand smells. So I would only poop in our apartment.
SPEAKER_05This is this coming from the guy that share used to share pictures of his poop. I thought he'd be like, wow, whose was that?
SPEAKER_02Right? Well, you're not dumping the turds in there, you're just dumping the toilet paper.
SPEAKER_05You were looking at their wife.
SPEAKER_02God, this makes gross nasty. Um
The School Kids And Gang Reality
SPEAKER_02so so I would I'd do the Donald Duck shower. I'd just take my shorts and my underoose off and step into the shower, uh, do the bidet blaster on my beehole.
SPEAKER_05Is it Donald Duck or Porky Pig?
SPEAKER_03Both, technically.
SPEAKER_02They're both technically, both are right. You're right. I always just called it Donald Duck in it. So uh blast us out, dry off quick, shorts and back on, back to work. Um their buildings are meant for maximum airflow. Um, so you will have critters in your apartment. Uh, we found a cockroach in the the floor one morning. Uh Julie goes, What's that? I'm like, I don't know. I've been stepping over it all night when I go pee. I don't know what it is. I just figured it was leaves or dirt or something. Like, I don't have my glasses on. She goes, Me either. And she leans over and she goes, Oh, it's a cockroach. Like, well, it's about to be a dead cockroach.
SPEAKER_05And uh if you see black vehicles rolling up to his house this week, the CDT's gonna be after him. Right. He brought home a bat.
SPEAKER_02Oh, came home with you? Well, maybe you're not sure where it came from. I see the picture and I'm like, What so Julie said she always leaves the washing machine lid open, which if a bat got stuck down in the washing machine, it's not gonna be able to fly out, right? You know, and it's not gonna be able to climb up the sides. So maybe Julie thinks it was just, and then I just threw the clothes on top of it when I did laundry because I didn't look. I just walk up and it made it through the wash and spin cycle. It was still alive. I went to go grab it and it started and started moving around. I'm like, How is that thing not dead? Bats might be like on par with cockroaches, yeah.
SPEAKER_04A high efficiency washer, don't you? Yeah, it doesn't use a lot of water, like it probably wasn't enough water to drown it.
SPEAKER_02As long as it's like being waterboarded, yeah, just it just like that poor little buck, or or we're sitting there, but you'd but you'd think the freaking spin cycle would have got it at least. We're sitting with patient zero, yeah, right?
SPEAKER_03Oh god damn it.
SPEAKER_02So um, but it was it was weird, it's hot there was only the first day we got there, it was it was hot, hot, like mid-80s. When we got when we walked out of the airport, it was like somebody hit you in the face with some hot. Um humidity too? Oh, yeah, it's all very, very humid down south in those places. Yeah, um, well, not I mean, no more humid than here. If you look at the humidity charts, pretty much it's the same as Iowa in August.
SPEAKER_04I don't Mexico at least feels a lot damper than it does here. Like maybe it's because everything smells damp in Mexico, like it just feels like it's but it's always wet, like it never dries out there. Yeah. Versus here we get the dry seasons.
SPEAKER_05This was a a we were trying to do comparisons last night. And do you think Saturday Wheeling for Wyatt or 3R, whatever you want to call it, was worse than the days in Indiana.
SPEAKER_04Indiana was hot, but it wasn't wet and damp. I would say Indiana was it was super humid down there. Today I feel like it was better, but sleeping was better at Wyatt's for Warriors, Wyatt's Warriors event.
SPEAKER_05Chad was of the opinion that Saturday at White's War the Whites Warriors event was worse than Indiana, and I kind of agree with him.
SPEAKER_00So it it wasn't quite as hot, but it was way more humid. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So I guess I'm I'm one of those people that like right now it sucks, but then tomorrow I forgot about it already. You know what I mean? Like it's like eh, it's over.
SPEAKER_05It's called Alzheimer's.
SPEAKER_04It could be Alzheimer's, but yeah, I just I feel like during the day wasn't as bad, but at night in Indiana sucked.
SPEAKER_00Night wasn't as bad for sure in in Iowa.
SPEAKER_04It cooled off quicker, I think.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_04So I just it was wet. It was grosser at one time.
SPEAKER_02That was the only day it was hot. Yeah. Every other day it was like low 70s, mid-80s. Nice. Uh or sorry, low to mid-70s. Um, you know, at night it get down low sixties. I mean, it was it was like middle of the night, I'd be like, whoo, is there a third blanket that I can pull up to my neck here?
SPEAKER_05Did you see the forecast for tonight? I did not. Up up north, they're talking high 30s.
SPEAKER_04Ugh.
SPEAKER_05I'm not ready for that. I was told yesterday that we are six weeks from the first frost.
SPEAKER_04The other day, someone told me we were only 18 weekends away from Christmas.
SPEAKER_03Right?
SPEAKER_05And he said that when the goldenrod, which is a weed in the ditches, blooms, it blooms based on daylight as the days get shorter. And that by hundreds of years of watching it or whatever, they say that when the goldenrod blooms, you have six weeks to first frost. That's the yellow flower you see in the ditch right now.
SPEAKER_04I know it got it gets dark earlier because the other day I'm like, what time is it? It's shit out. I've noticed that too. It's like it's only 8 30. It's like this is bullshit. Like, I want it to stay sunny out until 9 30.
SPEAKER_02Uh they only have 12 hours of daylight down there. Really? It's it's sun ups about six, sun down's about six forty-five. That's year round. Yeah, year round. You said you're like 10 degrees latitude. It never changes. Like, that's just pretty much what they've got all the time. They said it doesn't matter, but and it was weird. They call this time of year winter. Well, they're close enough that just to the south of them is.
SPEAKER_05But that's that was one of the things I wondered when I asked you were you north or south of the equator? Because like Cal had just but he just got back from Chile. It's winter down there. I mean, they damn near got snowed in the day they were supposed to leave. So I wasn't I couldn't remember on a map where Costa Rica was, and you said you were 10 degrees north.
SPEAKER_0210 degrees latitude.
SPEAKER_05So I don't, I guess I wouldn't even are you even really able to tell the season's difference when you're when you're that's that way all the time.
SPEAKER_02The the only uh like December, January, February, it just dries out a little bit. They just get less rain.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I go, we don't have fall like you guys do up there where the leaves change colors and fall off, it just stays green all the time.
SPEAKER_05I see, do so the leaves like die off and new ones come or never fall off.
SPEAKER_02They just never fall off. They just they got year they got year-round growing seasons.
SPEAKER_05That's why their watermelon's so good and their strawberries are so good.
SPEAKER_02Well, that was what uh Esteban was saying about the farmer's market. He goes, A lot of the stuff was probably just picked over the weekend because we were there on no Sunday. He goes, It probably just picked a day or two ago. That's awesome, and then put into the containers and you know, plastic containers.
SPEAKER_00Um but guys ever had a yellow watermelon?
SPEAKER_04I never have, I've seen it, but I never had it. I've never you heard of it.
SPEAKER_00See we grew it years. I yeah, we were probably Adam's age when we grew it at mom dad's place, but that was some of the best watermelon we ever had.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04I've always wanted to do gardens because I enjoyed the fresh, but I don't have time to maintain it. And we've talked about doing like a family garden, like with Kelly's family, just put a garden in and we all help take care of it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so you take care of it, they come get the food.
SPEAKER_04No, I think they've I think they would all help take care of it for sure.
SPEAKER_05Probably more than I would because here's what you do you plant it big enough that you have a small tiller on the back of the tractor to till between everything, and Billy come out and farm all summer.
SPEAKER_04Farm all summer long.
SPEAKER_00I would do like what I did and put the black fabric down.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's what I thought. Did you do a garden this year?
SPEAKER_00No, but the last time I did a garden, that's what I did, and it was game changing.
SPEAKER_04That's what we did with the little garden we have. We've we so I was super lazy, put the black paper down, and I took the torch, burnt holes, planted everything. Then I done mulch
Beating Termites With Tools And Welding
SPEAKER_04on top of it so it holds moisture longer. Right. Because I suck at watering plants. It sounds like they've actually done pretty decent. I'm not I know you killed the tree I gave you. All the trees have died. Kevin Kurt gave us 10 trees that died.
SPEAKER_05You might not get any more trees, by the way. I know she she texted today. She's like, Ah, you might not get your trees.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So is what it is.
SPEAKER_05So another member of the family is starting a new job soon. So I don't want to go any further than that because it's not mine to share yet. So but should be lower stress level. It's not me. Damn it. Any other anything else on the trip, Gar? Or should we kick you over to Patreon?
SPEAKER_02And then we what is it? We got all that stuff finished up. It was a little It was probably the only thing on the whole trip that really irritated me. You know, because Julie's just she's small, right? Like, and when they're like, They had to give her a booster seat on the plane. No, they were like, you know, asked, you know, just kind of figuring out whatever it, and you know, she's like, Well, I can paint. And the guy's like, Well, yeah, you can paint, but are you good at painting? And Julie's like, Yes, I'm good at painting. Yeah, but a lot of people say Is this someone that was on are they good at it? Is this someone that was on your crew, like your mission? And I sort of from the area. I told uh I told Michael, I'm like, if you don't have her painting as a lead in one of the rooms, it's gonna be one of the biggest mistakes you made on this whole trip. So who decided that stuff, Michael? I think it's just kind of yeah, he picks like the team leads for different rooms.
SPEAKER_05I was for one of the rooms, I was the team lead for a room and just kind of wasn't people from just the Manchester Church, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there was people from Manchester and Cedar Rapids. But it was all that church, like yeah, it was radiant church.
SPEAKER_05And then without giving away identities, was he Manchester or Cedar Rapids Church?
SPEAKER_04He was here. Don't beat him up.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that's probably not the churchy thing to do, but I know and I I talked this side of the table that can do it. I I I talked to him later. I mean, we can get some president's masks, yeah. And I understood where he was coming from. It just came off as douche. Came off arrogant. He came off as a douche when he said it. When I talked to him about it later, he's like, Well, this is kind. I'm like, from his from his the job that he has, he has people tell him all the time, yeah, I can do that, and then they can't do that. Yeah, and so that's where he was coming from. I'm like, well, she won't lie to you if she can't do something, she's gonna tell you. And don't be a dick. Um, and then uh we had a fun day, went down to the Pacific Ocean and uh down to a see sharks resort down there. That's what I was like, man, I'm so time, and one of the guys uh Doug, he's like, I ain't getting in that ocean. I I ain't gonna be shark bait. No way, I'm not getting in that water.
SPEAKER_05The guy you said had a cool Jeep?
SPEAKER_02I did not say he had a cool Jeep.
SPEAKER_05Did he not say that last night?
SPEAKER_02I wasn't here. I said, You've worked on his Jeep, and I said, And you're like, Have you seen that, Jim? Like, yeah, he drives it to church.
SPEAKER_05You're like, Yeah, it's cool. He drives it to church.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna say I think you're putting words in my mouth. I'll put something in your mouth. But then uh that's the gayest thing you've said all night.
SPEAKER_05I'd say what?
SPEAKER_02You assume yeah, yeah. Go go inside and tell your wife you're gonna put something in her mouth, and you should see if she assumes the same thing. Remember the picture I think, yeah.
SPEAKER_04You should how many you know how many pictures you sent me a day? I can't keep like which one.
SPEAKER_05Confused Kirkwood Hillbillies.
SPEAKER_04I don't think I seen that one. Okay, never mind.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't think I seen the other one.
SPEAKER_05Anyways.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, floated around in the water and so was it warm? Oh, it was like beautiful. It was it was the water was like rooting.
SPEAKER_05What's the seafloor like? Is it sand or is it like rocky?
SPEAKER_02It was pretty much all sandy there. There was some rock, there was some rock out there, but it was all smooth from the sand being rocky coil, coral. Well, at least I didn't step on any coral. Okay, it was all where we were swimming, it was all sandy. Farther out, probably. And then uh yeah, uh well, we found coral up on the beach, so I'm sure there was a I'm sure there was a reef somewhere that you find shark teeth or anything?
SPEAKER_05Did you look?
SPEAKER_02I wasn't looking that close.
SPEAKER_05I was just I've always walked beach like when we go to Florida, then I'm like, I never wanted to find a shark tooth in the wild, so to speak. And I've never done it, but and then uh but I've been on beaches where super sand, nice, soft. The next one you will have kind of you're like walking on my gravel driveway because it's so like the beach in Florida that we were out on like St.
SPEAKER_02Pete's and you know this treasure island and those. Yeah, it's because the beaches are like crushed seashells, that's why they feel like a gravel road, because it's they're crushed seashells, they're super sharp and abrasive on your feet. But and then uh yeah, pretty much the last thing I did, I got baptized in the Pacific Ocean down there. So that was uh that was neat, it was a good feeling.
SPEAKER_05A re-baptized or first time ever? Uh well I got somebody asked me that, so I didn't know.
SPEAKER_02Did uh you know, like his uh um parents were Lutheran when I was born. Yeah. So did like the little kid baptism, you know, that your parents do the baptism. Right. I did the they call it a believer's baptism. Yep. Um, that once you're old enough to make that decision for yourself, and so I did that down there. Um that's pretty court. You won't start on fire, you won't melt. It was uh purified.
SPEAKER_05You want me to stop my diary as well, grab a cup of it? I'll just flick it at you here and we'll see what happens.
SPEAKER_06I'm melting.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. No, that's awesome. So it probably means more this time around because you're making a conscious decision for it. Right.
SPEAKER_02It's yeah, it's and you know, and it's getting doing the believers bapt. You can, you know, by the you know, the the church we go to and and that, like you can go to heaven without being baptized. You know, it's it's it's not a requirement to it's just uh it's a it's a public profession of profession that of you know if you're Catholic, then you gotta you gotta pay to get it. My wife hates it when I say that. I mean when uh Josh went through uh uh when he went through the seminary school out in Philly, yeah, he had a professor out there that said most theologians put Catholicism closer to a cult than a religion. Yeah. I mean they just the well, I mean, so one of the guys on the trip, uh well Doug. Single him
Living Conditions And Unexpected Critters
SPEAKER_02right out. He uh no, he just said growing up, he was Catholic, and he goes, They they would encourage you to like like don't read your Bible, the the priest will tell you what you need to know. Like don't basically don't think for yourself, right? Just let the priest tell you what you need to know. And and uh I'd heard stories from people that that were um from like a staban in in Costa Rica when he was young, um, and they weren't part of the Catholic church, the Catholics would throw rocks at them. Oh, yeah. And if the priests found out that like you had a Bible in your house, they'd come around like the Gestapo and take the Bible from your house and would literally burn it.
SPEAKER_05Damn. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So at our as not that I haven't met a lot of really nice cat. I mean, one of my best friends growing up is Catholic, you know, and and he's and he's you know technically my wife was Catholic, so she married me, and then they threw her out. You know, and he's one of the nicest, most generous people I've ever met.
SPEAKER_05You know, but the the receiving line at our wedding, her grandma goes, you know, you can't take communion at church now.
SPEAKER_03I think I'll be okay.
SPEAKER_05And you know, the Methodists, they're the most heathen.
SPEAKER_02Well, that was some the people that worked there at that at the at the school were they were awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh uh Girla, the gal in the kitchen, that woman could make anything taste good. Like we had we had dressed up and dressed down rice and beans for five meals a day, and it never got old.
SPEAKER_05That guy was talking about last night. He fits in down there today. Yes.
SPEAKER_02We'd have first breakfast, and then you could either call it first lunch second breakfast or first lunch. I called it second breakfast. There you go. It was beans and rice for everything. So we had first breakfast, second breakfast, and then we'd have lunch, and then we'd have second lunch, and then we'd have supper. I was, and I literally I I it was I it was a meal every time, but I never felt like I'd like get to the point I'm like, oh gosh, I really hate myself right now. But it only lasted like 10 minutes and then I was fine.
SPEAKER_04It was beans and rice. I mean, I can't believe they chose that like delicacy when you're wiping your ass and putting it in a garbage can.
SPEAKER_02That is their base of all their food. I know. I'm telling you, I only had if it's like all natural, like here we go.
SPEAKER_05TMI.
SPEAKER_02Quality food, all you gotta do is wipe two to three times you're done. All natural, huh?
SPEAKER_05I just had a little I had to warn the listeners because you told me that last night. So I was prepared for it.
SPEAKER_02Um but uh and then uh the the maintenance guy at the school, he and the cook, Girla, so Girla and Albero were uh they were married. Um they got married when she was 14 and he was 18. And have been married for 37 or 39 years now. She had their first child when she was 15, the second one when she was 16.
SPEAKER_05So you know, we think that's weird now, but if you look back culture, that was normal. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_02Back in, you know, forty forty years ago, back in back in the 80s.
SPEAKER_04We would have been like geriatric motherfuckers back in the day. You know what? I mean, you know what I mean? Like way back.
SPEAKER_02Imagine imagine my brother having their first child at 37.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, Doc Holiday was what, 43 when he died?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's 45.
SPEAKER_05A little different mid-folded ballgame.
SPEAKER_00Um first kid at 27. I mean that's old for a lot of early.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. We uh you know, and then uh there was another gal that worked, she kind of was in a custodial role. Um, but listened to her her testimony. And uh when she was younger, she was a national level athlete. You know, she was uh 100, 200, 400, 4x4, you know, up to like up to like 400 sprints up to 400 meters, and she almost qualified for the Olympics. And I'm like, she still looks like an athlete. Like you just watch her walk, you know, like how just athletes walked, you know. They just you she still walked like that. Uh Elba was her name, but it was uh, and then John and Jennifer, the two people that ran the school, they've been they've lived in Costa Rica for 26 years down there doing missionary work.
SPEAKER_05Somebody's gotta do it.
SPEAKER_04I'm glad somebody's doing it. But they're they were Americans and moved there.
SPEAKER_02Yep, so they went to school in Minnesota. Uh well, I don't blame them for going to Costa Rica though. From southern Canada all the way to Coast Costa Rica. But I get the John, his grandparents were missionaries in Costa Rica, and his parents were missionaries in so he's lived in Costa Rica most of his life.
SPEAKER_05Family tradition.
SPEAKER_02Um, I think they said he I think he said he's only he's only lived in the States for 10 years of his life. Oh wow. Um, most of it has been spent in Costa Rica in some capacity or another, you know, doing mission work.
SPEAKER_05Find what you want to do and got a got a uh remote.
SPEAKER_02He was the he was the guy that had the four tuner that that I sent you. I said well, I sent it in the group chat picture of a it's a Toyota four-tuner.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, not a four yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_02Not a forerunner or uh uh had a diesel in it, had a 2.8 liter manual diesel. Um, but he goes, I'm like, so what's the deal with this versus a forerunner? He goes, basically, it's a dressed down forerunner. He goes, it's 20,000 new, it's $20,000 cheaper than a forerunner.
SPEAKER_05Are they left-hand drive or right-hand drive down there?
SPEAKER_02Left hand. All right, we can work. And um that was the the driving and the traffic down there. Nobody was ever in a real big hurry, but my Atlanta, they pack all them in there and a two-lane, like a two-lane highway or like a two-lane interstate, or sorry, four-lane interstate, you know, divided two lanes
Ocean Day And A Baptism Moment
SPEAKER_02going one way, two going the other. Uh, they'd make five lanes on that. I've so I've been it's motorcycle, cars, motorcycle, cars, motorcycles.
SPEAKER_04So yeah, when I've been to the Dominican or Mexico, everybody's in a fucking hurry. Everybody wants to be in the same spot at the same time, and you're holding on for deer life.
SPEAKER_02So Costa Rica wasn't ever like like a like a rat race, it never felt like suit like on their four lane the the the uh speed limit was 60 kilometers an hour. So like 50, yeah, ish maybe 40. 40.
SPEAKER_04Ooh, look at you doing man.
SPEAKER_02Well, for 40 kilometers an hour is 25, so you can do it from do the math from there. So yeah. Um, you know, so nothing was ever super fast, but it was like just everything's jammed together, and um I'm like, those motorcycles gotta get hit frequently, don't they? And uh Stewart was like, Yes, they get hit all the time, all the time. Uh I was talking to the guy, talking to a guy at the trip. I'm like, can you imagine driving a you know F 350 with the tow mirrors on this? And the guy's like, you wouldn't make it 50 feet before some motorcycle knocked your tow mirrors off, right?
SPEAKER_05Well, those tow mirrors might be they're pretty stout. I think you're knocking the guy off the motorcycle. Then it's a sport.
SPEAKER_04Over in Mexico, Caleb was like, We we were in these like Toyota vans that were manual transmissions because I want to drive this thing. All the vans we're going through traffic, this guy's slamming gears, downshifting and cutting people off. And Caleb was like, This is fucking crazy. I'm like, Yeah, hold on.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like everything like I think I saw two pickups the whole time I was down there. Most of the time, if they need a pickup, they just get one of those little Isuzu or Kia box trucks. Yeah, you know, they they'll just get a box truck for it. Um, if they are pickups, I only saw two full-size pickups down there. And one was a Toyota and one was a Dodge. Um F 450 dualies. They must have had like a spare transmission hole. Anywhere other than America, there ain't big trucks. No. There there aren't. There really aren't. Well, and like at least I know it's the way it is in in Germany. Uh, you're taxed on the size of your engine. Yeah. Not the weight of it. It's how many what what's the displacement of your engine? The bigger the displacement engine, the more that that's partially why they were so far ahead of us for so many years and having turbo and turbos and higher horsepower, lower displacement engines, is because that they had to make they had to make power without so just to help out with taxes.
SPEAKER_05We are about an hour and a half in. So should we kick it over the Patreon?
SPEAKER_04I say we should.
SPEAKER_05Final words.
SPEAKER_00Saw a TikTok today about a $15,000 Toyota truck.
SPEAKER_05That's been around a while. Not coming here. I've heard it might. Look up Chicken Tax.
SPEAKER_00I I realize that, yes. But they are trying to figure out a way to get it here. And they're probably gonna have three seats in it.
SPEAKER_04Three seats is all, huh?
SPEAKER_00In what? You gotta have more than two.
SPEAKER_02That's gonna be the loophole. For what?
SPEAKER_00If the chicken taxes, you gotta have more than two seats.
SPEAKER_02Yep, right. But which vehic which vehicle? I meant a Toyota truck.
SPEAKER_00Is a Toyota truck.
SPEAKER_02Oh, their their super affordable one.
SPEAKER_00So that they had basically uh a concept vehicle where they converted it from so if they come from wherever it was, Venezuela, with uh a diesel, they put a uh motor from like a FJ in it. Uh Tacoma front axle, so it was four-wheel drive. So they're trying to gauge interest in it.
SPEAKER_05I wish they would just let us have Hyluxes.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Saw a lot of Hyluxes down there. So that four-tuner is basically an SUV on the Hilux chassis. Hilux is a fucking awesome.
SPEAKER_00Can we just import a uh four-tuner?
SPEAKER_02Maybe road trip in the back. So, and it's got the fold down jump seats in the back. But it the reason the guy, John, the reason he wanted it is because you know, same thing we've talked about a lot of times, is he goes, it's got buttons, switches, none of the it's got a screen for the radio, but that's literally all that's in that screen is just the radio. He goes, it's like a I think you said it was a 22. It's a 2022, it's got power windows, power door locks, no cruise control, no anti-lock brakes. I think you said no anti-lock brakes.
SPEAKER_05Uh, you know, it's I don't care about power locks, power windows, but I want cruise control. Power windows.
SPEAKER_02Power power locks with four doors is would be a pain in the butt if you didn't have power locks. I I would give up power lock before I give up cruise control.
SPEAKER_00As long as it has air conditioning, right, guy. Correct.
SPEAKER_02C C Perfecto. Uh yeah, uh yeah, I'd give up power locks and power windows before I gave up air conditioning. I'd give up cruise control before I gave up air conditioning. Because like for a lot of like no air, no, no cruise control. He goes, Look at the driving we do. Well, that's true down there. He goes, I'm never the traffic's so congested, like you're never gonna use it. Once you get like an hour out, you'd have to get like an hour from the school before you could even set it because everything's not gonna use that because then the roads are so terrible, they're so curvy, yeah. Right, and it was it was super interesting. It was it was uh it was an eye it was an eye-opening trip. Can you do it again? Um, I'd love to. If they had a trip down there, I'm like, could you just do it a little earlier in the summer? Right, so that we don't have to. So it's not like I don't get home and go right back to school.
SPEAKER_00Don't have to take four personal days.
SPEAKER_02Uh three. I'd
Food Culture And The No Frills 4x4
SPEAKER_02take three because Friday was a flex day. So she goes, you'll get the eight hours in at some point. So I had to take flex day, or I had to take a personal day for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. And then since Friday was a flex day, yeah, and I I don't know, I was there last weekend for probably four or five hours. Getting ready to be m moving, moving, moving furniture around, getting computers set up, but I still don't know if that's the way I'm gonna keep. Did you peek in there?
SPEAKER_00I don't know if that's I unlocked it and opened the door to turn the light on. That was about as much as I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I don't think that's the way I'm gonna keep the furniture in there, but it's good enough for the first day of school.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. It's a start.
SPEAKER_02Cool.
SPEAKER_04I don't have any other last words. Mine is take more time for your friends. Because like you guys, like we spend a lot of time together. But like my buddies before, like the guys that were there for me before, I've kind of neglected them over the last.
SPEAKER_02Do they still get together frequently down there? No, not really.
SPEAKER_04I mean, everybody's so busy with kids and all that kind of stuff, but sports and what we talked about. It's like we need to be better about more than getting together one time a year. I mean, can you imagine like all of us just stopped hanging out and you only see this one time a year?
SPEAKER_00It's like hanging with Brandon. I I don't do it very often. I love it when I do, but yeah, just we don't make the time and we should.
SPEAKER_04How far do you guys live apart? An hour. That's how that's how it's like this is stupid. Like we go to Cedar Rapids multiple times a month. We get hey, we're in town. Let's go eat somewhere or something.
SPEAKER_05Nick and I are the same way, or Eric and I are the same way. I drive by Eric's house every literally drive by his house every day.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's and well, there was uh so our the the pastor from the church in Cedar Rapids, he kind of surprised everybody showed up for a couple days down there. He flew down, stayed for two days, and flew home. Um, because he and the guy, one of the guys that's a husband and wife that she's the director, he's the assistant director. And uh he and our pastor were uh we're really good friends. Uh our pastor was the best man in in their wedding. And I'm like, so how often do you guys see each other? Oh, you know, sometimes it's only once a year. Uh, but we try and get together a little more than once a year. I'm like, that's awesome. Because one of my best friends growing up lives an hour down the road, and I probably haven't seen him for three years. Yeah. And you guys are literally thousands of miles apart. It's literally if you Jake, because Jake checked, he goes, How awesome would that be for me to take the RV down there? It's a 72-hour drive without stops. 72-hour drive, and they still make the time to see each other at least once a year. Some way or another, they see each other. Uh, and it might have been like every usually it's like every year. Sometimes he goes, it might stretch out to two years, but I'm like, that's uh that's that's but you make time for those that make time for you, right?
SPEAKER_05And that's where I'm at at this point.
SPEAKER_00And it seems like those particular friends, it doesn't matter how long it's been when you get back together again. Oh, yeah, it's just like you'd never been apart.
SPEAKER_02That's the way it is every time with Travis and I. It's like we just pick up the conversation wherever it left off, and that's how we were all yesterday.
SPEAKER_04But just it makes you be like, man, this is stupid that we wait that long.
SPEAKER_00Why can't we live closer? Why aren't you my neighbor?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, why don't you? I've been trying to talk them all to move to Manchester. I've been telling several selfishness in me because I don't want to live in the city.
SPEAKER_05Oh, but I've been telling several people that have become close friends that get the fuck out of Illinois, come to Mantown. Get get out of Indiana. Do they listen? No.
SPEAKER_02Well, Ian might have it's it's super expensive to move. It is.
SPEAKER_05Uh Catherine said, she's like, well, I got a family in Des Moines, so they could probably find me a job here. I looked at Ian and I'm like, see? See? And Ian's like, but I like my job now.
SPEAKER_02So we have jobs in Iowa.
SPEAKER_05He's got a pretty good job. Anyways, I don't have anything else to say because uh I'm just keeping my.
SPEAKER_00We should drop anchor.
SPEAKER_05Crash into the dock. Aye. Um, I'm not gonna Iowa goodbye it. Or no. Irish goodbye. Irish goodbye it like I was requested last week. Bye-bye. We'll catch y'all next week. Uh we might have some updates on core next week. We'll see. Cool.
SPEAKER_02So Buenos Noches.
SPEAKER_05Oh, Mr.
SPEAKER_02Spanish over there.
SPEAKER_05He's he's gone from German to Spanish.
SPEAKER_02So uh when we were out for a walk, I uh we're you know, because Julie had to get Starbucks every morning, and it was like a five or ten minute walk to Starbucks, so we go get Starbucks. Uh on the way back, we might have we we uh are on our way out, we uh we just in passing this guy and I walked by and I'm like, Buenos noches. It's like eight o'clock, it's like 7 30 in the morning. I'm like, I mean, Buenos Dis. So on the way back, we saw her again, and uh Michael starts making fun. He's like, he looks at the guy, he's like, Buenos
Make Time For Friends And Sign Off
SPEAKER_02Noches, yeah. See, Steve, Buenos Noches. She's laughing, she's talking on the phone. I'm like, I don't know what to do.
SPEAKER_00If you guys are still listening, how many times do you think that Gyar had rotten Ronnies while he was in in Costa Rica?
SPEAKER_04Rotten Ronnies.
SPEAKER_05Stay tuned to the Patreon if you want to find out. It's only five dollars a month, unless you want to win something.
SPEAKER_00It's cheaper than McDonald's.
SPEAKER_05Then we're assholes because we make you pay ten dollars to win something.
SPEAKER_02So when we came back, when we got to the airport in Dallas, like, man.
SPEAKER_05You're gonna give a wait, wait, wait, stop! You're gonna give it away, and they won't have to go to the Patreon to listen.
SPEAKER_04They have to go to the Patreon. Well, it was gonna be about what I ate.
SPEAKER_05Right, but if you say what you ate, it will give away how many times you had it in because that wasn't after the trip. Let's just end it here. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Goodbye, everybody.
